This race was first held in 1971 and was part of the Barnoldswick gala weekend. It used to start at the Rolls Royce club and go through the centre of the town before makings its way to the narrow lanes that lead to open moorland and the 1,302 ft summit of Weets. It was a straight up and down race and as a lot of the running was on the road, it was very fast. In its day, it attracted a field of top runners, such as Kenny Stuart and Ron Hill.
The costs of closing off most of the roads through the centre of Barnoldswick meant that the race was eventually abandoned, but it was resurrected by Kevin Rogan with a new course which did not involve running through the town.
The new course is half a mile shorter than the old one, but is much more challenging in that there is more off road running and more climbing, some of it on the return leg when you least expect it. The course is still partially on the road and as such, it will not suit off road purists, but if you are looking for a different race with a bit of a challenge, this race will not disappoint.

This race was first run in 1981 and the course was designed by Peter Jebb, who together with his wife Anne, organised the Buckden Fell Race for 20 years. Peter was asked to organise a race by the Buckden Gala committee after winning the Fellsman Hike in 1981. In 1987, Peter altered the route to make the race more interesting and tougher. The course has remained the same ever since and this was the course on which the records were set.

Barlick had three teams in these relays. Two conventional teams and what was supposed to be a family team, but it was registered as a mixed team. The details are:
A Team | Pos | Time |
Andy Berry | 17 | 11:24 |
Michael Keegan | 21 | 11:16 |
Rob Weir | 21 |
10:58 |
B Team | Pos | Time |
Simon Kelly | 33 | 11:51 |
Andrew Carson | 22 | 11:16 |
Scott Baistow | 25 | 12:01 |
Mixed Team | Pos | Time |
Sam Wadsworth | 13 | 10:34 |
Fiona Brotherton | 75 | 19:52 |
Sam Wadsworth | 61 | 10:26 |
In 1999, on the old course, Sam Wadsworth won the egg stage in 3:26, only 4 seconds outside the record. Inspired by memories of former glories, he started at a furious pace, hoping that once more, he might do well in this part of the race. Going up the hill, he was second behind Tom Adams of Ilkley, but from there on, his advancing years and lack of training gradually took their toll. The mad dash at the start took too much out of him and his overall race time was down. However, further down the field, Fiona Brotherton continues to improve with each race.
49 Sam Wadsworth 18:43
308 Fiona Brotherton 34:31
The club was formed in December 2012 as a fell running club, but now also competes successfully in all running disciplines - Road, Cross Country, Fell and Trail. There is a strong spirit of inclusiveness and friendship within the club.
The club welcomes new members. You do not have to be a top runner to join the club. The existing membership covers a whole range of abilities, from those who like to compete at the top level, those who merely like to enjoy the experience of running, to those who are completely new to the sport.
So, whatever your level, you will always find a place in the club, whether it is going out with others of similar ability or joining one of our many training sessions, if you want to push your running to a higher level. And you will always find members in the club who will be happy to pass on their knowledge or offer you advice.
In addition, the club now has a large junior section which encourages participation in the sport by youngsters. You will find details of our junior activities in the Junior Web Site.
If you are interested in the joining the club, you will find an application form on our Membership Page.
Another week - another triathlon. This week four members had a go. They finisheded as follows:
10 Chris Smedley 1:16:18
11 Mark Sandamas 1:16:25
76 Sam Berry 1:33:52
92 Des Walkden 1:37:14
Three Barlickers went down to London for this event:
Ian Livesey 3:15:47
John Boothman 3:28:45
Martin Carson 4:15:04
The main aims of the club are to increase the participation of running in Barnoldswick and to keep organised running as accessible as possible.
