Membership fees

Despite the name, the club participates in all disciplines of running, fell, cross country and road and welcomes applications from runners of all abilities to join us. If you are not sure if the club is for you, why not come to one of our training sessions or one of our regular pub runs. You will be under no obligation to join, but you will get a feel for the club and a better idea if the club is for you. You can merely turn up to a training session unannounced, but it would be better if you contacted our club secretary first (details on the contacts page) and let him know that you will be coming and he will make sure that whoever is leading the group will look out for you. If you are an absolute beginner to running, you too are most welcome to join us in one of our sessions, but please contact our secretary first and he will make sure that you will have a programme with which you are comfortable. It was good to see the usual pub runners out tonight, plus a few more, taking part in this race.  On the way to the top, Matt Lockyer of Pudsey & Bramley was leading, but Luke Maude was hot on his tail.  When they had completed the loop and returned to the Pinnacle, the situation was the same and everyone thought that Luke was playing a tactical game.  However, as things turned out Matt, managed to hold on to the lead and he ran out the race winner, in front of Luke.   Behind this leading pair, Stephen Chew was putting in a solid performance and he retained the third place which had secured on the ascent right until the finish.   Not that far behind, was Stephen's brother Shaun and  to complete the top ten finishers, was Carl Pawson.

Lorraine Slater dominated the ladies race.  She took the lead on the way up and with her usual gritty determination,  there was no way that she was going to relinquish that lead.  She said after the finish that she did not look back at who was chasing her, but her lead at the end was comfortable.  It was also nice to see Rachel Lowther racing, even though in the Calder Valley, she had been nursing a shoulder injury.  It was also nice to see so many Barlick shirts out and to see five of them in the top ten.  The results are:

1 Matt Lockyer 26:05
2 Luke Maude 26:19
3 Stephen Chew 26:48
6 Shaun Chew 27:56
10 Carl Pawson 29:19
18 Andrew Driver 30:28
20 Mick Keegan 30:50
24 "Fat" Jock Boothman 31:57
26 Lorraine Slater 32:08 (1st Lady)
30 Des Walkden 32:30
37 John Boothman 33:19
43 Glenn Whittaker 34:12
57 Rachel Lowther 35:34 (6th Lady)

To say that this is a hilly half marathon is an understatement.  It is a half marathon with ascent of 2704 feet.

34 Michael Alexander 2:31:43

Whilst many were anticipating the Calderdale Way Relay on Saturday, a couple of Barlickers made their way to the Lakes for this race.

48 Richard Lowther 1:44:18
119 Pete Jackson 2:03:35

209 Finishers

Pete was happy with his performance in what for him was a comeback race.

The results from this race, including a full breakdown of leg times are now available.

These reveal further facts which were not readily apparent yesterday.  The first is that on legs two and three, Barlick were the fastest team.

The second thing the results reveal is that our vets team were 4th vets team.

Lastly, they reveal that there were 88 teams in the competition and that our B team finished in 38th position, comfortably in the top half of the table. This is remarkable when you consider that some members of this team were not even running at this time last year.

All in all, they reflect a great team spirit within the club and everyone who took part in this event can be justly proud of what we have achieved.

Another good performance this weekend was that of Luke Wallwork in the hilly Windermere Marathon.  Luke has been quietly working his socks off over the last few months and has been rewarded with a cracking time of 3hr 12mins 51secs on his marathon debut.

It was an amazing day as 48 club members all came together to put out 4 teams in this prestigious event.  Calder Valley fielded some class runners and once again came away with the honours.  But this year, Barlick were chasing them all the way and at the end of leg 2, their lead was down to two and a half minutes.  However, the strength in depth of Calder Valley showed and they came home nine minutes in front of Barlick.  Both teams were way ahead of the rest of the field and there was then a 14 minute gap to third place Holmfirth.  This is a brilliant result for the club and it is quite amazing when you think that the club has not been in existence for three years.

However, the action was not all at the front of the field, as our mixed team were putting in some terrific individual performances and they finished 23rd overall and first mixed team and taking away the mixed team trophy.

The full details will follow shortly but the teams finished as follows:

1 Calder Valley 5:53:06
2 Barlick A 6:02:47 (20 mins improvement on last year).
3 Holmfirth 6:17:05
23 Barlick Mixed  7:14:20
28 Barlick Vets 7:26:14
38 Barlick B 7:47:12

Gary Bradley was on holiday in Wales and, as you do, thought that he would enter the local fell race.  He was nursing a niggle so he didn't do as well as he would have liked. With a little bit of breeze, the weather was great and the summit views were magnificent.  Maybe too much sightseeing and not enough racing.  He was joined by Richard Treitl who made the trip down for the day.

This race saw a great battle between Tom Corrigan and Danny Collinge of Clayton, with Tom eventually running out as the race winner. There were top ten finishes for Andy Collins and Andrew Chew and a welcome return of Dan Taylor to racing who finished just outside the top ten.

In the ladies race, Jen Hird continues with her comeback, finishing 7th lady and it was good to see Paula Clark continuing with her foray on the fells.

1 Tom Corrigan 31:39
9 Andrew Collins 33:35
10 Andrew Chew 33:42
13 Dan Taylor 34:09
25 Lee Edwards 35:50

Barlick Fell Runners have been asked to take over the organisation of this race following the retirement of the current race organiser. There has been a race at this gala since the early 1970s and hopefully the future of this lovely traditional Dales fell race is now secure.

There was an interesting tussle at the front of this race.  The field was led out by 14 year old Josh Boyle of Blackburn Harriers and he was closely followed by Sam Tosh.  The position remained the same until half way up the steep climb up Pendle, when Sam took the lead.  However, Josh remained in touch and although Sam ran out the winner, Josh finished not far behind.  There was a good gap then between those two and the rest of the field.  But make no mistake, those that were at this race saw a rising young star of the future.

Just a couple of Barlickers out racing ahead of the coming weekend.

34 Jonathan Boothman 38:45
101 Jack Ingham 48:55

Jackie Hodgson achieved her first ever win at this race, finishing first lady and 16th overall in a time of 42:46.

This was Cathryn Jackson's first race and a pretty good performance she put in too!

John Boothman 1:37:54
Gary Parkinson 2:06:55
Cathryn Jackson 2:09:35

53 Susan HIRD 28:02 New PB

12 Derek WALKDEN 20:38

It was wet, wild and windy for the annual jaunt up Pinhaw and 143 people ran in the worst conditions seen for a long time in this race. Jimmy Craig showed everyone a clean pair of heels coming home in front of Tom Corrigan and young Jordan McDonald from Clayton. With 4 Barlick men in the top 5, they took the team prize on the night. The Barlick ladies also put on a great show jointly winning the team prize with the Trawden Belles. In the ladies race, Debbie Gowans of Accrington Road Runners was first back followed by Lorraine Slater of Barlick.

A big thanks must go to all the marshals who braved the wind, rain and dropping temperatures and to Terry Lonergan of Complete Runner for sponsoring the race with some prizes, numbers and start and finish banners.

After two races, Tom Corrigan is now leading the table following his 3rd place finish at Hambledon.
