Membership fees

Despite the name, the club participates in all disciplines of running, fell, cross country and road and welcomes applications from runners of all abilities to join us. If you are not sure if the club is for you, why not come to one of our training sessions or one of our regular pub runs. You will be under no obligation to join, but you will get a feel for the club and a better idea if the club is for you. You can merely turn up to a training session unannounced, but it would be better if you contacted our club secretary first (details on the contacts page) and let him know that you will be coming and he will make sure that whoever is leading the group will look out for you. If you are an absolute beginner to running, you too are most welcome to join us in one of our sessions, but please contact our secretary first and he will make sure that you will have a programme with which you are comfortable. A great performance by Jacqueline Collins saw her comfortably take the honours in the women's race, with Heather Driver finishing 8th.  In the men's race, Jonathan Cleaver led the Barlickers home, finishing in 5th place.  Junior runner, Alex Mason is getting used to mixing it in the senior races and he enjoyed a top ten finish (finishing 8th overall) and 1st under 18 by a comfortable margin.  A good turnout of Barlickers with many finishing amongst the top category positions.

258 finishers

There was a new look about the race this year.  Instead of the usual finish at Heath Rugby Union Club,, this year, Spring Hall was the finishing venue.  In addition, for the first time ever, chip timing was introduced to the race, although it suffered from a few teething problems.  As a result of finishing at Spring Hall, there was a big change to leg six.

As a sign of the growing strength of the club, this year Barlick entered two male and two female teams.  Such is the spirit in the club that everyone gave their all and there are tales from all legs of people pushing themselves to the limit.  Whether it was Laura Craig, who had only recently had her second baby and who stepped in at the very last minute to replace a flight delayed Hannah Watson.  Or Gary Shaw, who finished leg two looking like he had had been put through the wringer by Julian Hood (he had), or Andy Berry whose face at the end of leg 5 showed that he had nothing more to give.  Then there was Leanne Dinsdale who looked so bad when she had finished her leg that she was given the once over by the medics. Luke Maude was another whose partner, Nick Treitl, pushed him to the limit, leaving him completely drained by the end of his leg.  Finally, there was Ian Livesey who was in the final leg with Jon Cleaver.  They started in third position.   Chasing down second place was out of the question due to the time difference, but behind our final pair was the Wharfedale "B" team who were looking strong.  At the canal bridge, Ian and Jon Cleaver had a lead over Wharfedale of a minute, when Ian suddenly felt a sharp pain in his leg and realised that he had injured his achilles tendon.  He could have been forgiven for pulling out at that point, but not only did he fight through the pain, but our final pair opened up the gap between them and the chasing Wharfedale pair.  All this commitment and effort was put in by people proud to wear the Barlick vest.

What did all this effort lead to? The first two clubs last year were Calder Valley and Wharfedale and this year, their positions were reversed, with Wharfedale putting in a very good all round performance and taking the honours.  In a year when several top Barlick runners left the club to chase glory elsewhere, the A team came home third, the same as last year.   It was a great performance from all who took part.   Last year, our "B" team finished in 20th position, but this year, they finished 14th.  Again due to great commitment from everyone.

What about the ladies?  Once more, all the commitment and effort paid off and they were rewarded with 3rd place, after good performances throughout all legs.  Our first ever ladies "B" team also gave their all and finished in 11th position.

There was a great spirit and camaraderie amongst all the Barlick teams at this race and everyone who took part can be proud of what they achieved today.

This a tough day covering 37 miles from Langdale over Helvellyn, Scafell Pike & Old Man of Coniston making 10,000ft of ascent.  The weather was kind, which was a bonus.  We had three pairs out, but with mixed results, from 1st MV110 to a DNF.

50 Gary Bradley & John Boothman 9:23:02 (1st MV110)
64 Karl Robb & Simone Capponi 9:42:42

The race was won by Sam Watson of Wharfedale, with Nick Treitl not far behind him in 2nd place.  Jack Villiers had a good run to finish in the top twenty and secure 2nd MU18, whilst Susan Hird was 2nd WV60

2 Nick Treitl 33:10
18 Jack Villiers 38:34 (2nd MU18)
84 Glenn Whittaker 45:31
172 Susan Hird 60:24 (2nd W60)

As the name suggests, this run takes place in the Howgills and as a result, there is some serious climbing involved in it in addition to the marathon distance.  It was therefore a great run by Ian Cox to come home in 7th place.

7 Ian Cocks 4:14:04

What an amazing run by Ian Livesey this weekend.  This race is 38 miles long with ascent of 1,100 ft and runs along the Six Dales Way.    The record for the event was 5 Hours and 44 minutes.  Ian felt a bit intimidated at the start, as he found himself standing next to the British 100K women's champion, but the Barlick spirit won through and not only did he win the race, but he also smashed the record, finishing in a time of 5 hours, 7 minutes.

This is a really good fell race and not only that, it is local too.  The only one Barlicker to take part this year was Gary Bradley and he had a creditable performance finishing in 37th place out of 107.

37 Gary Bradley 2:54:09.
