Membership fees

Despite the name, the club participates in all disciplines of running, fell, cross country and road and welcomes applications from runners of all abilities to join us. If you are not sure if the club is for you, why not come to one of our training sessions or one of our regular pub runs. You will be under no obligation to join, but you will get a feel for the club and a better idea if the club is for you. You can merely turn up to a training session unannounced, but it would be better if you contacted our club secretary first (details on the contacts page) and let him know that you will be coming and he will make sure that whoever is leading the group will look out for you. If you are an absolute beginner to running, you too are most welcome to join us in one of our sessions, but please contact our secretary first and he will make sure that you will have a programme with which you are comfortable. The word is that Chris Smedley took part in this race and finished 73rd with a time of 1:37:52.

John Boothman ran in this race as he was sponsored for the 'Bottle Stop' charity by the Barnoldswick & Earby Rotary Club.  He ran steady under doctor's orders, although not as steady as the doctor ordered and he finished 26th out of 158 with a time of 43:56.

Good run from Andrew Carson saw him lead the Barlickers home in this race and they finished as follows:

24 Andrew Carson 44:56
56 Des Walkden 50:05
134 Richard Treitl 59:30

This week, Dan Taylor took part in the Burnley Park Run .  It was the third time that he had taken part in the race, and he set himself a new PB.

3 Daniel TAYLOR 19:04

 Jean Brown Sets New Record

The run of the day had to be from from Jean Brown who worked her way through the field from 20th position at CP3 to 9th position overall.  In doing so, she finished first lady and set a new course record.

In the men's race, Neil Northrop of Dark Peak set a scorching pace right from the outset, at the front of the field and the following pack struggled to keep up.  Shaun Chew was one of those chasing Neil, but the fast pace eventually took its toll and as he faded, it allowed Neil's team mate, Joe Blackett to move into second place, thus ensuring a Dark Peak 1st & 2nd positions.  Mike Wallis of Clayton improved both in his position and time from last year, but he could not quite keep up with Joe Blackett and had to settle for 3rd place.

Despite having secured a one-two, Dark Peak missed out on the team prize by one point and it once again went to Clayton.

Of the Barlickers, Shaun Chew was probably disappointed with his race, although he finished in a very creditable 4th place.  Andy Berry had a cracking race to finish in 13th place with Stuart Bryan not far behind him in 16th place.

Rob Weir, having made a navigational error, definitely did not enjoy his race and was disappointed with his performance, in fact, a smile only returned to his face when he was sinking a pint in the Assherton Arms.

Special mention must be made of Rachel Lowther, who has only been running for a year and she made it round the course with some encouragement from her sister, Kirsty Hall.  This is a tough course and the fact that she completed it says a lot about the determination of Rachel.

Shaun Chew led the Barlickers home, but only just managed to beat Nick Treitl who must still have been feeling the  effects of the Three Peaks Race. Sam Wadsworth was third for Barlick.

On the night, there seemed to be a lot of Barlick vests on display and a total number of 16 Barlickers entered this race.  The only club to exceed this figure was Wharfedale.

As is usual with Barlick, a post race analysis took place in the local hostelry.

The whole of the Barlick finishers and times were:

9 Shaun Chew 24:59
10 Nick Treitl 25:19
13 Sam Wadsworth 26:18
17 Dan Taylor 26:45
21 Andy Berry 27:11
25 Ian Livesey 27:59
26 Andrew Carson 28:05
28 Mick Keegan 28:16
51 John Boothman 31:13
52 Derek Walkden 31:22
53 Dave Halliday 31:23
61 Scott Baistow 32:03
70 Bob Jackson 33:34
71 Glenn Whittaker 34:02
88 Rachel Lowther 36:33
90 Richard Treitl 36:42

Lucas Payne has been nursing an injury for some time and he entered this race to see if his body was on the mend.  Here is his report of the day.

It was a very cold, windy day.  224 runners all lined up, or should I say huddled together, off went the hooter and we were away.

The route was very interesting in that it was a mix of trail, soft sometimes very muddy ground and normal narrow tarmac roads,  basically an uphill first section, then undulating and finally a killer hill at the end. Super views were the order of the day.

I was delighted at finishing 8th in a time of 38:09.  However, I was brought back to planet Earth when the fellow who had pursued me relentlessly from the start finished just behind me. Heasked my age to see if I had robbed him of a prize. I said that I was 44.   He said "That's fine, I am a vet 55. OK,  I may look like Gollum off Lord Of The Rings, but that made me realize that I was almost dead ...  you have to laugh.

My lady wife and her chum also finished their first 10k race in 1 hour.  Round of applause. You never know, we may tempt them to sign up to BFR.

The Race Director and his colleagues really did organise a super event, very well marshalled.  Hot drinks, flapjack and bananas for the finishers - many thanks to them all.

This event is over 60 miles, involving some very hard rugged moorland and climbing over 11,000 feet. As you might expect, Mick Plummer was there, but unusually for Mick, he retired at Cray, as he was not feeling well.

However Gareth Bradley stayed the course and completed it in 17 hrs 41 minutes. But for the grouping time that he incurred, he would have completed it 25 minutes quicker.

In his first race for the club, Chris Smedley came 31st out of 158 finishers, with a time of 1:11:58

This race was postponed from 24 March. Our sole representative was Andrew Carson and he had a PB, finishing in 40th position out of 808 finishers.

40 Andrew Carson 40:17

We had eight Barlickers entered in this race. Two did not start, Pete Jackson due to injury and John Boothman on doctor's orders but he joined the supporters who were out there to cheer on those who did take part. Only four completed the course and we have no note at the moment why the other two did not finish. The times were:

Nick Treitl 3:30:48
Andy Berry 4:15:34
Michael Thistlethwaite 4:34:29
Tom Bebee 5:01:54
Mark Sandamas DNF
Richard Treitl DNF

Barlick were 35th team.

Barlick had three teams in these relays.  Two conventional teams and what was supposed to be a family team, but it was registered as a mixed team.  The details are:

A Team Pos    Time
Andy Berry 17 11:24
Michael Keegan     21 11:16
Rob Weir 21

10:58

B Team Pos    Time
Simon Kelly 33 11:51
Andrew Carson      22 11:16
Scott Baistow 25 12:01

Mixed Team         Pos    Time
Sam Wadsworth 13 10:34
Fiona Brotherton 75 19:52
Sam Wadsworth 61 10:26

In 1999, on the old course, Sam Wadsworth won the egg stage in 3:26, only 4 seconds outside the record. Inspired by memories of former glories, he started at a furious pace, hoping that once more, he might do well in this part of the race. Going up the hill, he was second behind Tom Adams of Ilkley, but from there on, his advancing years and lack of training gradually took their toll. The mad dash at the start took too much out of him and his overall race time was down. However, further down the field, Fiona Brotherton continues to improve with each race.

49 Sam Wadsworth 18:43
308 Fiona Brotherton 34:31

Another week - another triathlon. This week four members had a go. They finisheded as follows:

10 Chris Smedley 1:16:18
11 Mark Sandamas 1:16:25
76 Sam Berry 1:33:52
92 Des Walkden 1:37:14

Three Barlickers went down to London for this event:

Ian Livesey 3:15:47
John Boothman 3:28:45
Martin Carson 4:15:04

A lovely sunny day saw two Barlickers turn out for this race, which apart from slushy ice in a couple of gateways, was run in ideal conditions. At the summit, Andy Berry was 54th, but lost a few places on the descent to finish in 59th place.

Rachel Lowther turned in 223rd place and again lost a few places on the descent to finish 231st.

Final places and times:

59 Andy Berry 22:33
231 Rachel Lowther 29:02 (28th lady)

With all races cancelled this weekend, a group of intrepid Barlick Fell Runners went up Weets on a training run. The average age of the group was around thirty. The snow reduced their average mental age to around seven. The group was Sarah Tippler, Andy Berry, Nick Treitl, Michael Thistlethwaite and Andrew Carson.

The pub run with a difference proved to be very popular, with the Chilli Pepper at Earby completely booked up with runners and some of their partners, combining the usual Wednesday run with a good social evening.
