It was a remarkable win in the ladies race by Emma Hopkinson of Wharfedale, as it was only at the weekend that she completed the Bob Graham Round. Second in the men's race was Joe Hudson of Keighley & Craven. He is the son of Rob Hudson who, in his day, dominated the BOFRA races. It is interesting too to see that his other son, Louis Hudson, won the U17 race. It looks as though fell running is in the Hudson blood.
The Barlickers finished as follows:
8 Luke Maude 9:02
24 Tim Chadwick 10:11
37 Victoria Peel 11:33 (5th lady)
46 John Boothman 12:01
52 Andrew Smith 12:25
91 Craig Child 15:31
23 David Poole 40:25
30 Alex Mason 41:26 (2nd U18)
50 Barrie Charnley 45:27
24 David Pease 22:15
36 Shane Muller 23:39
57 Tony Duffy 27:51
59 Emma Pease 28:31
70 Nicola Muller 31:30
13 Karl Robb 23:15
22 David Pease 25:38
No point going all the way to Burnsall just to do one race, so for his second race of the day:
73 John Boothman 24:12
Another cracking run by Jonathan Cleaver saw him come home in 2nd place behind Jack Cummings of Ilkley.
2 Jon Cleaver 58:03
11 Nick Treitl 1:06:25
44 Shane Muller 1:17:13
56 John Boothman 1:20:32
57 Derek Walkden 1:20:41
91 Cloey Mason 1:28:52
131 Nicola Muller 1:40:50
8 Ian Cocks 19:25
This was the final race in the brilliant mid-week series put on by Rossendale Harriers. As with the other races, plenty of Barlickers turned out with plenty of good performances too, although Jimmy Craig & Andy Collins did not get off to the best of starts, by going the wrong way early in the race. Both did well to recover, but the mistake probably cost them both a place.
These races seem to attract some good runners and this one was no exception. Nick Leigh from Horwich RMI looked very good at the front of the field, but then so did Rob James from Royton Road Runners and Joe Mercer, Nick Leigh's team mate.
In 4th place was Jimmy Craig who did well, after the cock up at the start of the race, to get within striking distance of 3rd place. Then all the Barlickers started coming home in quick succession, Andy Collins, Jon Cleaver and David Poole, filling four out of the top ten places. Carl Pawson continued his recent good form to make it into the top twenty, but surprisingly did not manage to secure the 1st M45 place. The honours for age related places went to Andrew Smith (M55) and Pete Jackson (M60). After never winning a prize, Andrew has got one two weeks running. Of course, the number of Barlikers in the top ten meant that the club once more came away with the men's team prize.
In the ladies' race, the honours fell to the cheerful, but determined Annie Roberts of Todmorden Harriers and she was followed home by Jackie Collins. Surprisingly, Lorraine Slater was down in 6th place and although Lorraine is always at the peak of physical fitness, she admitted afterwards that on the night, her head was not in the right place on the night. Hannah Newbold made up the Barlick team and together secured the ladies' team prize. Not only that, but Jackie Collins also came away as the series winner. Once more, it was a night when Barlick came away with more than their share of prizes and it was a good conclusion to this mid-week series.
This is well organised series and full marks should go to Rossendale for hosting these races.

Running ultra races is something else. This particular race was 82 miles in length. To put that in perspective, a marathon is a fair challenge for anyone. Well this is three marathons, one after the other, with a park run thrown in at the end, just for good measure. To do that, you have to be physically fit, but you also need mental toughness to get you through the stress to which you are subjecting your body. Lucas Payne has both, having done lots of Ironman Challenges when he was younger. but this was something else. Although he is fit, he probably did not put the hours in on his feet when training and it was his sheer determination that saw him come through in the end.
He has written an account of the day, which is below.
64 Jackie Hodgson 45:28 (1st LV35)
Since the middle of June, the name Jimmy Craig has once more been appearing in the lists of finishers and although not back to his old form, he is another Barlicker getting back on his game and will soon be challenging for the top positions in a race.
As for Carl Pawson. He has always been a top athlete, but he has his own theory about what brings out the best in a man, in a race.
Jacqueline Collins is always challenging at the front of the field and it was the same again in this race, where she once more had a podium finish.
7 Jimmy Craig 24.58
11 Carl Pawson 26.45
12 Tim Chadwick 26.52
33 Jacqueline Collins 31.42 (2nd lady)
42 Glenn Whittaker 33.49
For some reason, there has been a little delay in getting these results out, but here they are:
4 Nick Treitl 12:19
17 Scott McCredie 13:53
26 Ben Hoyle 14:33
32 Andrew Smith 14:40
35 David Pease 15:18
55 Shane Muller 16:48
70 Tony Duffy 18:16
94 Nicola Muller 21:22
105 Kristian Clayton 25:44
'A' Race
34 Alex Mason 16:30 (3rd MJ)
'B' Race
13 Barrie Charnley 18:21 (2nd M40)
18 James Austin 18:56
23 Emma Bailey 19:53 (2nd F40)
Andy Collins has been on the come back trail for some time and he seemed to get hi mo-jo back in the Pen-y-Ghent race at the beginning of June. Since then, he has many top ten finishes and he had another good performance in this tough 15 mile race finishing 4th overall. Looking back over the past three months, you get the feeling that if he can keep injury free, there is still more potential in this runner.
4 Andy Collins 1:26:33
13 Nick Treitl 1:36:45
41 Andy Smith 1:50:43
50 John Boothman 1:54:01
56 Peter Jackson 1:56:01
123 Jamie Fox 2:22:58
136 Richard Treitl 3:15:37
15 Lucy Beresford 25:02
131 Lily-Grace Clayton 27:24
161 Oscar Clayton 28:10
292 Kristian Clayton 34:57
87 Kai Paton 27:33
What a difference between the race last week, in this Rossendale Harriers mid-week series, and this one. Last week it was gentle runnable hills over firm ground. This week, it was very much like a traditional fell race, with several steep climbs, lots of mud and just to complete the picture, there was clag on the tops and continuous gentle rain. You leave the village of Cowpe and almost immediately start on a long ascent, at first on the road and then on to a muddy footpath and then a muddy track. This leads to the site of an old quarry where there is some respite as the wet and muddy track levels out before the runners make a short descent before starting a further climb, So this race goes on, culminating in the final climb up Whittle Pike itself. All in all, a tough course.
After the descent from the summit, the first three finishers, Joe Mercer of Horwich, Darren Kaye of Calder Valley and Andrew Worcester of Todmorden, had broken away from the rest of the pack and were in a race of their own. There was nothing to choose between them and they were all seriously racing. This left 4th place Peter Bray running on his own, before the pack came into view, with Andy Collins in 6th place shouting, " I got lost". David Poole followed shortly after, as did Stephen Shorrocks and then Carl Pawson, still showing his new lease of life. Four runner in the top 16 must have put Barlick in a good position for the team prize. But it was not to be, Horwich not only had the race winner, but his two team mates also finished in the top ten and the honours went to them.
This was a tough race and the ladies were half way down the field, with Anne-Marie Hindle of Rossendale leading the way on the ascent. She was shortly followed by Lorraine Slater and completing the top three was Jacqueline Collins. This was how it finished.
The next Barlick lady to finish was Paula Cullen who looked absolutely shattered on the way back down and she confirmed how she felt by ruefully shouting, "That was bloody hard". However, her efforts were good enough to once more ensure that the Barlick ladies took the team prize
There were category prizes too for Barlick with Andrew Smith finishing first V55 and Peter Jackson finishing 2nd V60. Apparently, this was the first time that Andrew, had won a prize, who afterwards modestly confessed that the conditions just suited him..
As usual with Rossendale, this was a well organised event and well flagged and marshaled, with results very quickly published. Well done Rossendale.J

121 starters.
Trawden Show might have been cancelled, but the race was still on, although it was a bit of a miserable day for a summer race. As in previous races, Ben Fish showed a clean pair of heels to the rest of the pack, although David Mirfield had a good run to finish in 2nd place. Together with top ten finishers Jon Cleaver and Alex Mason, it was enough for Barlick to easily finish as first team.

6 Alex Mason 45:55

The main aims of the club are to increase the participation of running in Barnoldswick and to keep organised running as accessible as possible.
