Great racing by the Barlick women today to take the first ladies' team place. Top ten finishes by Stephen Shorrock and Andy Berry enabled the men to take the second team place, with John Boothman making the third counter. Pete Jackson continued with his recent fine form to finish first V60 and it was a great outing for 15 year old Alex Mason in his first fell race.

The winning team this year was Dark Peak, followed by Edinburgh University and Keswick. The winning ladies team was not unsurprisingly Ribble Valley.. The winning time was 4:10:21. The Barlick teams finished as follows:
25 Barlick A 4:54:43 Nick Treitl / David Poole, John Whiteside / Ian Beresford , Andy Berry / Dan Mills
66 Barlick Vets 5:37:49 Virgil Barton / Chris Smale, Lucas Payne / Gary Bradey, John Boothman / Carl Pawson
111 Barlick Ladies 6:18:08 Sarah Bell / Leanne Dinsdale, Jacqueline Collins / Jennifer Hird, Victoria Peel / Lorraine Slater (14th Open Female Team)
The new season got underway at Cuerdon, with the men looking to defend their championship status and the women, newly promoted to the first division, looking to make their mark at the top level. The ladies were off first with somewhat of a depleted team in that several runners were missing because of the FRA relays the following day. However, it shows what strength we have in depth, as the girls who turned out, put on a brilliant show to enable the team to finish second in the division. For her first outing for Barlick in the cross country team, Sarah Jarvis made her mark, leading the Barlickers home and finishing 5th overall. Because all of our leading runners were in the V35 category, we finished first team in that category.
5 Sarah Jarvis 22:47
11 Rachel Villiers 23:40
20 Paula Clark 25:42

It was the same with the men. The team was depleted because of the FRA relays. Again what strength in depth do we have as those who turned out put on a tremendous show to bring the team home in second place against a very strong Preston team. Marc Hartley led the team home, with Lee Parrington not far behind and these two were supported by Stephen Shorrocks, James Tingle, Dan Balshaw and Ian Cocks.

It was a lovely day for this race and nice to see a few Barlickers turning out for a fell race. Ian Holmes did not take part as he had run in the Langdale race, the day before, but John Boothman is made of sterner stuff and turned out for both. Perhaps it was the sunny autumn day, but something put a spring in the step of Pete Jackson as he looked like a gazelle as he came past Top Withens, rather than a V60.
