It was a lovely day for this race and nice to see a few Barlickers turning out for a fell race. Ian Holmes did not take part as he had run in the Langdale race, the day before, but John Boothman is made of sterner stuff and turned out for both. Perhaps it was the sunny autumn day, but something put a spring in the step of Pete Jackson as he looked like a gazelle as he came past Top Withens, rather than a V60.

Imagine two back to back marathons with 4,000 metres of ascent thrown in. Add to that the rough terrain of the Lake District and that is the setting for this race. It runs from Caldbeck in the north of the Lakes, near Blencathra and finishes at Cartmel in the south. That is a total of 50 miles and it includes Blencathra, Helvellyn and Fairfield to name but three of the hills en route. Not only that, but Saturday was not the most brilliant weather in which to be out running. Gary Bradley completed the run in 14:49:14 and finished 64th male. There were 214 finishers and numerous others who retired.
This classic fell race was won by Carl Bell of Keswick AC in 2:13:14. Our only representative was John Boothman who finished in 154th position, which was better then last year, but in a slower time. The conditions were tough and John went astray for ten minutes. You would think that after 4 races, he would know where he was going. But the conditions were not good and a lot of the other runners struggled as well.

Two Barlick ladies did the club proud in this race. Emma Bailey was first lady and Susan Hird was 2nd LV60. The leading lady was Lucy Williamson of Ilkley Harriers until 300 metres from the end, when a sprint finish from Emma enabled her to pass Lucy and take the honours (and a £50 first prize).
On the other hand, Susan was the leading :LV60, but towards the finish, she lost her legs and had a "Brownlee wobble" and just missed out on a category win.

A new PB for Paul Elcock in this Half Marathon which he completed in 1:30:52, just outside his target time. His position was 462. There were 8,540 finishers.
In view of the team choosing to drop out of the Ian Hodgson, Andy Collins made the best of it by turning out for this race and showed what a job he could have done in the Lakes, by coming home in third place.

The main aims of the club are to increase the participation of running in Barnoldswick and to keep organised running as accessible as possible.
