Membership fees

Despite the name, the club participates in all disciplines of running, fell, cross country and road and welcomes applications from runners of all abilities to join us. If you are not sure if the club is for you, why not come to one of our training sessions or one of our regular pub runs. You will be under no obligation to join, but you will get a feel for the club and a better idea if the club is for you. You can merely turn up to a training session unannounced, but it would be better if you contacted our club secretary first (details on the contacts page) and let him know that you will be coming and he will make sure that whoever is leading the group will look out for you. If you are an absolute beginner to running, you too are most welcome to join us in one of our sessions, but please contact our secretary first and he will make sure that you will have a programme with which you are comfortable. A trail marathon with over 7,000 ft of climb.  That was the latest challenge for Cloey Mason.  She finished in 67th position and 12th female in a time of 4:29:28.  There were 297 starters.

We had no team selected for these relays, but Sam Boardman stepped up to the mark at the last minute, put a team together which qualified for the finals in Birmingham.  Well done to Sam and to everyone who turned out and put in such good performances.  Sam has put together a report of the day.

It was good to see a record number of Barlickers taking part in this race and it was good to see Jimmy Craig back racing.  He is not yet back to his old self, but he was up there, coming home in 6th place.  We had quite a few women out  and they all put in some great performances.  Leanne Dinsdale was back out racing and although she was nursing an injury and ostensibly going steady, she still led the girls home, finishing 6th female.   The conditions were not the best for this race, as in view of the recent inclement weather, there was quite a bit of mud about which made the climbs even more energy sapping.

This year we had one mens team and one ladies team out for the 12 and 6 stage event. Both teams put in strong performances to ensure that they both qualified for the nationals in a few weeks time. \

David Mirifield had a great run to comfortably take the win in this race, with a 3 minute lead over Paul Crabtree of Wharfedale, who just managed to hold off David Poole who came home in third place.Wharfedale.  The Barlickers finished as follows:

1 David Mirfield 51:00
3 David Poole 54:10
15 Chris Snell 1:00:15
26 Zac Kaye 1:04:54 (1st MU23)
29 Andrew Smith 1:05:24
30 Anthony Brown 1:07:19
69 Richard Treitl 1:31:05

77 finishers.

Only one Barlicker out in this race and he was the one man you could have forgiven for not running this week after his 55 mile run last week in arctic conditions.  Considering the state of his legs after last week he had a pretty reasonable run finishing in 47 position.

This is an incredibly hard challenge, but even more so in the conditions which prevailed on the day.  Read all about it from the account of the day by John Boothman, from the link below.

Hardmoors 55 by John Boothman

Our two intrepid runners John "three races a day" Boothman and Lucas "ironman" Payne decided together to take on this challenge which is a 55 mile race, including 6,561 ft of ascent.  John was determined not to go off too fast but, as can easily happen in a race, he got swept along with the crowd and completed the first nine miles to CP1 at an average pace of 5.81 mph.  This was much faster than his target pace of 5 mph.  Lucas went off even faster, finishing the first leg at over 6 mph.  By CP2, there was a 12 minute gap between our runners and this is very much how it was throughout the rest of the race.  Sometimes, John would close the gap and then Lucas would extend it again. On the tops, all the runners were exposed to prolonged periods of extreme weather.  The wind would bring you to a standstill and your supply of water completely froze up.     The last big climb was Roseberry Topping, by which time, the gap was down to eight minutes, but John's water had frozen up again and he entered a real bad spell.  He forced some food down and drove himself on finishing quite strongly.  In the meantime Lucas pushed on finishing in 11h 14 m 54 seconds a full 22 minutes ahead of John. Given that they were up against specialist runners and the conditions on the tops were horrendous, this was a remarkable performance from both of them.

27 Lucas Payne 11:14:54 (31st overall)
34 John Boothman 11:37:39 (40th overall)

343 started. 164 finished.  179 retired.
