Many races are described as being a "classic", but this race truly lives up to the term. It is a tough race with diverse challenges spread out over eight miles. When you run this race for the first time, you learn how best to run it. The subsequent times give a truer reflection of your ability. Against this background twenty intrepid Barlickers made the mid week trip to the Lakes to to take on this challenge.
There were some who should have perhaps never taken it on at this stage of their running careers. Scott Boardman, Stuart Bryan, Jack Ingham and James Stead come to mind. But they all showed great character, dug deep and finished the race and incredibly James Stead did not even come last.
At the other end of the field, Ricky Lightfoot once more showed has class and by Check Point One, he had already built up a comfortable lead. Surprisingly, at this stage, there were four Barlickers in the top ten, running as a group and occupying positions seven to ten. By the end of the race, this group had split up slightly, with Jimmy Craig finishing in 5th place and demonstrating his ability to cope with all types of fell running. This race was vastly different from the 15 minute up and down Bofra race where he finished 2nd last Sunday. In 7th position and showing some of the talent that made him an awesome junior runner, was Luke Maude. Our final top ten finisher was Nick Treitl and although he put in a cracking performance, he was somewhat shell shocked afterwards at the experience he had just been through.
Chris Smale dropped a little behind the leading group, but was still 4th Barlicker home in 15th position. Shaun Chew came home in 24th position, looking very comfortable leading our next batch of runners who all put in incredible performances. In the midst of this group was Chewy, who was finding that the hilly fells is much more of a serious challenge than flat tarmac. Des perhaps struggled as he came home amongst the old hands of fell running Glenn Whittaker and Pete Jackson.
Those were terrific performances from the whole team and to take on a race of this caliber shows just how far the club has come in its brief history.
Lastly, thanks should go to Eden Runners for putting on this race. It was well organised, well marshaled and the helpers from Eden Runners are such a friendly group of people that they add that extra special something to what is already a special race. And there were no midges at the finnish tonight!
The group left the pub at around 11:00 pm so there will be some tired workers trying to get up in the morning, but they are sure to carry to work with them memories of an incredible night.

The results are now out for this race and show that Nick won the race comfortably with a lead of 36 seconds over the 2nd place runner. They also show that in the Under 8s, it was very tight at the front with only 4 seconds separating the first three runners.

Jimmy Craig was taking part in his first Bofra race after he missed Sedbergh the other week. He finished second to Jack Smith of Wharfedale Harriers by 14 seconds. Jack has maximum points now after the first two races due to finishing second at Sedbergh and Rob Jebb not competing in the overall series.
12 Matt Lalor 1:13:56
Three Barlickers were out for this race. Both Chewy and Marc Hartley struggled with the steep ascents, but Jen Hird thoroughly enjoyed them, as she did the whole race. Her reward was a prize for being third lady - the first time she has ever finished so high up in a race.
As for the men, the race was won by John Raho of Holcombe in a time of 46:49. Mark Hartley finished 2nd and Chewy 7th.
2 Marc Hartley 48:15
7 Stephen Chew 54:53
39 Jen Hird 61:34 - 3rd lady
Heather Driver took part in this race and completed it in a time of 53:35. This was a PB by six minutes so she is felling very well chuffed.
It was the latest counter in the club championships and a few Barlickers took on this classic. It was also an English Champs race so the depth of the field was of real quality. Rob Hope of Pudsey and Bramley took the win with Rhys Findlay Robinson not far behind. Sam Gibbs led the Barlickers home in a creditable 62nd position. Lorraine Slater continued her good form with a 24th ladies position and 207th overall. Pete Jackson made a long overdue comeback which was great to see as well. The conditions for the race were good, which was clear and cool, although it was very windy on the tops. Everyone got round OK except for Richard who finished nursing an injury.
62 Sam Gibbs 3.25.02
105 Charlie Murgatroyd 3.39.39
177 John Boothman 4.06.35
207 Lorraine Slater 4.18.10
256 Glenn Whittaker 4.46.47
257 Richard Lowther 4.46.49
264 Pete Jackson 4.50.09
Everyone finished
Two of the clubs newest members Mark Holgate and Lee Parrington ran in this fast 5k in Lancaster. Both went sub 17mins and Mark ran a pb. Cracking debut for the club. The winner was Robert Hodgson in a very quick 15.20. The Barlick lads seemed to have a battle all of their own finishing within 4 seconds of each other.
7th Mark Holgate 16.55
8th Lee Parrington 16.59
A win for Nick Treitl in the Senior Race and a 3rd for Harley Treitl in the FRA Junior Championship Race
It was a day out for the Treitl family with Nick and Richard taking part in the senior race. At the moment, we are not sure where Richard finished, but Nick came away with the honours for Barlick.
Great run too from Harley in the Junior Championship Race. Looks like there could be a celebration in the Treitl household tonight.

It was great to see so many Barlick vests out for this new race with seven of them finishing in the top twenty. There are pictures of many of the runners above. Great too to see seven of our women members out there. They were led home by Lianne Dinsdale who also finished 5th lady runner.
Chewy led the men home, finishing in 3rd place and he was closely followed by Shaun Chew and Sam Gibbs

Whilst everyone in the club seemed to be anticipating the Calderdale Way Relay, Tim Piggott was making his way, along with Karl Zeiner, up three of the highest peaks in the Lake District. The total ascent is 3050 metres and the distance separating them is 59 kilometres.
They finished in 61 position in a time of 9:52:28
Not available on the day of the race was the fact two Barlick juniors turned out for a run in the U8 race. They finished as follows:
23 Harry Driver 3:09
24 Ruby Beresford 3:12
Two intrepid Barlickers made the journey to Austwick to take on this fell race. Nick Charlesworth of Wharfedale won the race by 4 seconds from Chris Singleton. Mick Keegan came 40th and Jack Ingham was 135th out of the 169 that ran.
The winner of this race was Simon Bailey who came home in 15:35. A top ten finish however, for Chris Smale who finished in 10th position in a time of 18:31
Jean Rawlinson was our only representative in this race. She naturally won her category and was 59th overall out of 79 runners.
59 Jean Rawlinson 62:46 1st FV60
The main aims of the club are to increase the participation of running in Barnoldswick and to keep organised running as accessible as possible.
